Loved by many, loathed by others, Big Bad Barry Hall is inarguably one of the greatest AFL forwards and crowd pullers of the modern era, as well as the most notorious and colourful player currently on the field. Now, for the first time, Barry tells the story of his rise to AFL greatness, beginning with his childhood in country Victoria and early years as a junior boxing champion, through to his draft to St Kilda as a teenager. H...e was the leading goal kicker for the Saints two seasons running, but also involved in wild times off the park and some controversial moments on it that saw him frequently in the headlines and occasionally before the tribunal.

Barry also tells of his six years at the Sydney Swans, from captaining the club to their first premiership in 72 years, to their gut-wrenching defeat in the 2006 grand final and the real story behind his sudden resignation from the club in 2009. He gives rare insights into the game in general, his time on the psychiatrist’s couch, how close he came to taking up a career in boxing and his often turbulent relationship with the media.

Finally, Barry describes life with his current club, the Western Bulldogs and his plans for the future. This is a must read for all AFL fans and anyone interested in an honest account of the real man behind the dramatic headlines.

Don't miss your opportunity to meet the man himself.
I have never used our blog in this way before (watch out, it might become a regular feature!) but I am really peeved and would appreciate your feedback. Booktopia are jumping on the National Bookshop Day band wagon. I ask, is this ethical when an online store like Booktopia is not involved in the local community like most bricks and mortar stores?

I thought the idea behind National Bookshop Day was to celebrate the place local bookshops have within their communities. The fact that they employ local people who love books and like nothing better than to share their book knowledge with locals. The ones that support local schools and clubs. The ones that invest time and effort in promoting literature to young and old. The ones that make it possible for readers to connect with their favourite authors through book launches and author events.

Does an online bookshop fit this criteria? And should they be jumping on the National Bookshop Day band wagon or are they being very cheeky?

Let me know what you think. Support your community by joining with your local bookshop to celebrate National Bookshop Day on Saturday 20th August, 2011.

“Booksellers do more than sell books and bookshops are more than places where you buy books. Booksellers are committed to fostering the love of reading and ensuring books are the bedrock of Australian culture. Bookshops are places you go to discover new ideas, to be stimulated and surprised. They are places for conversations and contemplation. Bookshops sit at the heart of our communities.” Fiona Stager, Avid Reader Bookshop, Brisbane.

On Saturday 20 August 2011, in hundreds of locations across Australia, bookshops will be holding their very first National Bookshop Day. Individual shops will be focusing on their uniqueness, inviting local authors and all members of the community to participate in readings, conversation about books, book busking and a wide range of other activities.

Supported by the Australian Booksellers Association, bookshops will promote the message that local bookshops are an integral part of the Australian way of life. They are the first point of contact between the reader and the books. They care about the customer, the reader, and the books they want to read.

In 2010, 66.2 million books were sold in the Australian retail book trade representing $1,257 million*. Based on US research, for every $100 of this spent locally, $68 of that stays in the community. Just under a quarter of all books sold in Australia are children’s books.*

“Bookshops have always been an anchor for the cultural and retail communities within Australia. National Bookshop Day is a time when we can celebrate the unique role of bookshops within the community, and highlight the many ways in which bookshops contribute to the local community and to Australian literature, culture and society.” Joel Becker, CEO, Australian Booksellers Association

So come together at your local bookshop on Saturday 20 August, and celebrate. For enquiries within your community contact your local bookshop.

Matthew Lloyd is destined to be remembered as one of the AFLs greatest full-forwards. This is his long awaited autobiography.
Matthew Lloyd at his peak was a goal kicking machine in an era where the power forward was fading from the game. A five-time all Australian, he topped the AFL goal kicking three times in his 270 game career and kicked the ton twice, his first in the Essendon Premiership season of 2000.

Matthew Lloyd Straight Shooter, is the story of a kid driven by a fear of failure to climb the highest peaks in football. Of a young footballer who taught himself a process to become the most accurate shot for goal in the AFL after a tirade from one his coaches. It is how a boy with natural ability became the captain of the Essendon Football Club, a premiership player and a life member of the AFL.

It is about the transformation into devoted father and a multi-media expert on AFL, when it looked like from the outside his career was cut short before its time; of a testy relationship with his final coach and the bone crunching hit that saw him finish his time as a player on suspension. It looks at how he considered a future with other clubs before deciding to retire on his terms.

Above all, it is a brutally honest account of an astonishing career from a man who is a straight shooter in more ways than one.

Don't miss your opportunity to meet the man himself. Only books purchased from Collins ABC Werribee will be signed. Due to time contraints, no other merchandise can be signed.
Final episode on ABC1 Thursday, 30 June @ 9.30PM
The final episode of this intimate series looks inside Baker Company, an elite group of Army soldiers who survived an extended tour in Iraq, only to return home and discover that the battle they left in Iraq has been replaced by a war within.

Filmed over three months in 2008 by veteran combat photographer Jon Steele, Baker Boys is a close-up and honest depiction of what the war looks like from the ground.

As the Baker Boys' three-month deployment unfolds, viewers get a gripping look into the everyday lives of US soldiers on the front.
The documentary features first-person, real-time storytelling as the soldiers of Baker Company negotiate new alliances with local Iraqi militias, pay off tribal sheiks for their cooperation, and deal with the fear and uncertainty of being thrust into the middle of counter-insurgency warfare, where money and trust are their most effective weapons.
The RMS Titanic is the most luxurious ship in the world, but all Tess Davies wants to do is escape the overbearing family she works for. As she uncovers what he has been concealing, Tess quickly becomes entangled in the mystery surrounding Aleca's fate. Soon Tess will learn that the danger they face is no ordinary enemy: that werewolves exist, and are stalking him - and now her, too. Her growing love for Alec will put Tess in mortal peril, and fate will do the same before their journey on the Titanic is over.
Claudia Gray @claudiagray
Claudia Gray is the pseudonym of New York-based writer Amy Vincent. She has worked as a lawyer, a journalist, a disc jockey, and an extremely poor waitress. Her lifelong interests in old houses, classic movies, vintage style, and history all play a part in her writing.

Review
Claudia Gray's newest venture into the realm of mysticism ticks all the boxes. If you loved Twilight, you will love Fateful. All the vital ingredients have been included: one damsel in distress (who throws a good punch, or two, when necessary), one evil mistress, one upper class hunk of spunk (who unfortunately turns into a werewolf at the most inconvenient times), lots of romance, tragedy & drama. All this amidst the majestic setting of the RMS Titanic. Who will survive the battle between good and evil? And will Claudia's story of the Titanic meet the same fate as the one we've come to know so well from the history books. I'll let you find that out!Collins Booksellers & ABC Centrehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08946685838573907151noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3562032793475436877.post-547938034313009972011-06-16T10:19:00.001+10:002011-06-16T10:21:17.936+10:00Australians love their books, and their bookshops!PRESS RELEASE - 3 June 2011
From the Australian Booksellers Association

Despite the closure of many Borders and Angus & Robertson shops, and the heavy discounting in the wake of their impending closures, the book market is down only 2% in 2011. Australians continue to buy their books from the many great bookshops all around the country.

According to Joel Becker, chief executive of the Australian Booksellers Association said, "In spite of the disruptions of the last few months, bookshops are innovating and building on their existing customer bases. Before the end of the year, we expect most bookshops – independent as well as franchise and group shops – will have the capacity to sell online and to sell E-Books. On August 20, there will be a national Bookshop Day, both thanking customers for their loyal support and promoting the role that bookshops have in the local community and the national culture."

Jon Page, President of the ABA and General Manager of Pages and Pages Booksellers in Mosman, had this to say about the state of the industry: "I believe that more community focused and specialised bookshops will be the future of bricks and mortar bookselling. The independent bookselling scene in Australia is particularly strong with 20% market share compared to the US where it is 9% and the UK where it is around 4%. Booksellers are excited about embracing the digital future of books and hope to be offering eBooks to our customers by the end of the year. We want to give our customers as much choice as possible."

Duncan Johnston, Managing Director of Collins Booksellers and ABA Vice President says, "While the overall downturn in retail, and particularly book retailing, is creating a lot of press lately, there are some exciting opportunities for book retailers to reposition themselves and take advantage of the restructuring that is presently occurring. Business models have to be reviewed and the good operators are doing this and giving their customers retail opportunity across all tiers than ever before. I’m confident that booksellers who continue to place their customers first and build loyalty to their brand will survive. Change has to occur and we have to embrace it and keep putting our customers first."
"Our customers have come out in droves to support us and make sure we are still part of their community", says Fiona Stager, co-owner of Avid Reader Bookshop in Brisbane. "They are now constantly telling us how important their local bookshops are to them. Our book clubs and event programs are exploding with people wanting to talk about books and engage with authors."

Leading independent bookseller and Book Industry Strategy Group member, David Gaunt of Gleebooks said, "Bookshops are, and always have been, about connection; connecting writers with readers, in a way that makes the experience count for more than just a transaction."
Simon Milne, who manages Leading Edge Books, a buying group for over 180 independent bookshops, says that his bookshops are ordering more stock from publishers than last year. "This is a great year for new fiction, both locally and internationally", says Milne, "and the success of books like Chris Womersley’s Bereft shows what happens when booksellers love a book and talk about it to their customers. Independent bookshops are hosting more book clubs and book launches than ever before, as well as embracing Facebook and Twitter".
Rory Buchanan has it all: looks, talent, charisma...an all around good-guy, he's the centre of every party and a loving father and husband. Then one summer's afternoon, tragedy strikes. Those who are closest to him struggle to come to terms with their loss. Friendships are strained, marriages falter and loyalties are tested in a gripping and brilliantly crafted novel about loss, grief and desire.Told from the points of view of nine of the people who are mourning Rory, this novel presents a snapshot of contemporary suburban Australia and how we live now. Marriage, friendship, family...all are dissected as they start to unravel under the pressure of grief.
Review
The narrative style of this novel was reminiscent of two of my favourite authors, Christos Tsiolkas (The Slap) and Jodi Picoult (My Sister's Keeper). You got a glimpse of the story from the perspectives of a number of characters, all with different attitudes, motivations and agendas. It is very easy to get lost when a story is constructed in this way but Kylie's easy style and captivating story line ensured you were kept on track. Some characters I liked, some I hated, some (well actually one in particular really) I thought was pathetic and some are riddled with scandal. There are a number of page turning moments and the best part is that the loose ends are neatly and logically put to bed. A very realistic study into people, you can imagine some of these characters being people in your own life.

Format: Audio

Publication: April 2011

Unbearable Lightness

I didn’t decide to become anorexic. It snuck up on me disguised as a healthy diet, a professional attitude. Being as thin as possible was a way to make the job of being an actress easier . . .” Portia de Rossi weighed only 82 pounds (37kg) when she collapsed on the set of the Hollywood film in which she was playing her first leading role. This should have been the culmination of all her years of hard work—first as a child model in Australia, then as a cast member of one of the hottest shows on American television. On the outside she was thin and blond, glamorous and successful. On the inside, she was literally dying.

In this searing, unflinchingly honest book, Portia de Rossi captures the complex emotional truth of what it is like when food, weight, and body image take priority over every other human impulse or action. She recounts the elaborate rituals around eating that came to dominate hours of every day, from keeping her daily calorie intake below 300 (1,260kj) to eating precisely measured amounts of food out of specific bowls and only with certain utensils. When this wasn’t enough, she resorted to purging and compulsive physical exercise, driving her body and spirit to the breaking point. Even as she rose to fame as a cast member of the hit television shows Ally McBeal and Arrested Development, Portia alternately starved herself and binged, all the while terrified that the truth of her sexuality would be exposed in the tabloids. She reveals the heartache and fear that accompany a life lived in the closet, a sense of isolation that was only magnified by her unrelenting desire to be ever thinner. With the storytelling skills of a great novelist and the eye for detail of a poet, Portia makes transparent as never before the behaviors and emotions of someone living with an eating disorder.

From her lowest point, Portia began the painful climb back to a life of health and honesty, falling in love with and eventually marrying Ellen DeGeneres, and emerging as an outspoken and articulate advocate for gay rights and women’s health issues.

Portia deRossi @PortiaDeRossi1
This Australian stunner first made waves as a virginal nude model in the 1994 big-screen comedy Sirens. After a succession of small parts in mostly forgettable films, the actress joined the cast of the hit drama Ally McBeal in 1998 and stayed with the series until it ended. Although she continued to take occasional movie parts, the small screen remained her primary medium, and in 2003 she signed on as part of the ensemble screwball sitcom Arrested Development. Off screen de Rossi has enjoyed a high-profile love life. After a short-lived marriage to a sound engineer, she began dating singer Francesca Gregorini, whom she eventually left for comedian Ellen DeGeneres.
Review
I am not a biography reader and I may even venture to say that this may in fact have been my first biography. It was an impressive one to start with and one that has triggered my taste for exploring biographies in the future.
I was never a mad Ally McBeal fan or a Portia de Rossi fan for that matter so, the fact that I enjoyed this book, I mean, really enjoyed it, is even more surprising. Perhaps 'enjoy' is the wrong word to use here. The book was mind boggling. It was fascinating to delve into the mind of someone so obsessed and addicted. At certain points in the book it made sense that Portia was going down the path of destruction based on the things that were actually going on in her head. Portia was able to effectively communicate, in an explicit way, the link between mind, body and spirit.
