The story begins with Jane already a successful published novelist, unmarried and nearing her forties. When pressed by her niece, Fanny Knight, a young pretty girl desperate to fall in love, Jane is forced to look into her past and examine afresh the reasons why she has remained single.
There was Harris Bigg, whose proposal she did accept amid much general rejoicing but then rejected. Edward Brydges who would so clearly have been an ideal companion but who left his declarations too late. The vicar who is tongue-tied in her presence but whom she teases mercilessly. And the crush on the young surgeon, Mr Haden.
